A natural & gentle detergent
Soapberries, also known by the name soap nuts, are a 100% natural laundry detergent. They are the fruits of the Sapindus mucorossi tree, which grows in the tropical rainforests of Central America and southern Asia. The natural content of saponin in the soapberries allows them to wash your clothes nicely clean. Soap nuts are gentle to your clothes and will keep the colors and texture of your clothes for longer. They can be used for all textiles – including kapok, silk, wool, etc.
How do soapBERRIES work?
As previously described, soap nuts contain saponins which are found naturally in the berries. They produce saponin to protect themselves from insects.
Saponin contains surfactants that can reduce the surface tension between the water and the dirt on your clothes so that your laundry becomes clean.
Soapberries are most effective at temperatures between 30 and 60 degrees. For washes below 30 degrees or short 30 degrees washes, we recommend that you soften the soap nuts before use. To do this, soak them in warm water for 5-10 minutes before use so that the saponin can be activated. You can easily use soap berries at over 60 degrees, but then the saponin breaks down much faster and the soap berries cannot be reused.
Does my laundry get clean?
Yes, the soapberries can easily wash your laundry clean! However, you should be aware that some stains may be difficult for the soap berries to remove, as they contain neither enzymes nor chemicals as traditional chemical-containing detergents. Therefore, you should treat the heavy stains before washing with soapberries, for instance with our natural stain remover block or just plain neutral detergent.
Although your laundry looks clean, it may contain bacteria and house dust mites. However, bacteria and house dust mites are first killed at high temperatures. This is also why the Danish National Board of Health recommends washing towels, underwear, bedding, cloths, tea towels, etc. at 60 degrees. There are very few detergents that can kill bacteria alone without high temperature.
Can I use soapBERRIES for white laundry?
Soapberries do not contain bleach or optical white, so you will find that your white clothing will turn gray with time. If you would like to avoid this, you can add baking soda or soda crystals to your white laundry.
